GozNym: Protect Yourself Against It and Other Malware

By Michael Carpenter, IT Network / Security Supervisor at Marine Credit Union

Online and mobile banking has made our everyday lives easier. We can deposit checks, transfer money and view our balances without having to go into a physical bank location. However like any other online tool, convenience comes with the risks when keeping your information secure. It is important to stay informed about current information security issues and risks.

It has been reported that 18 financial institutions have been impacted by a new malware called GozNym, which targets online banking accounts without any warning to the user. Marine Credit Union has not been impacted.

Once the virus gets into a computer, it waits silently until the user accesses their online banking to attack, stealing passwords and usernames. By the time the user realizes anything is wrong, the malware attackers have already gained access to their accounts and stolen their money.

Follow these five steps to help protect yourself against GozNym and other malware:

  1. Secure your computer and keep your software up-to-date including antivirus or anti-malware software.
  2. Avoid public computers and Wi-Fi when accessing your online banking account.
  3. Create a strong password and change it frequently. Avoid using the same password for different online accounts.
  4. Monitor your bank accounts daily to watch for suspicious activity. If you see suspicious activity, contact your bank immediately.
  5. Always log out when you are done with your online banking account.

Marine’s online and mobile banking systems have NOT been impacted by GozNym. Marine Mobile is protected by a security system that immediately notifies Marine’s Information Security team when there is suspected fraudulent activity on an account. Marine will then instantly notify the member by email, text and voice call until a response is received.
